What Is The R500 Grant?
The R500 Grant is generally known as the Grant-in-Aid, but it is not a grant in its own right. It is an additional R500.00 a month paid on top of a beneficiary’s main SASSA grant. This grant is meant for persons who require continuous care due to the disability, old age, or veteran status of the beneficiary, who must provide support with the most basic needs.
Who Qualifies For The R500 Grant?
While the extra R500 can be received along with the main grant, it should be possible only if your family member is already receiving a full SASSA grant of any of the categories below:
- Older Persons Grant
- Disability Grant
- War Veterans Grant
Apart from holding one of the aforementioned core grants, the following conditions must be satisfied by the recipient of this additional grant:
- The person is unable to care for themselves as a result of either physical or mental disability.
- They require full-time assistance from a caregiver.
- They must not be residing in a government-sponsored care institution.
- They are capable of producing a medical assessment or doctor’s report that details the reasons for continuous care.
The extra payment of R500 will be added to your monthly grant automatically once approved.

The $500 is payable to eligible grant recipients along with the main grant disbursed through the following means:
- Direct Deposit into your bank or PostBank account
- Cash payout at designated SASSA pay points
- Authorized retail outlets or mobile-less transfers wherever applicable
- Deputy/Procurator until the beneficiary is to collect in their own capacity if any
