South Africa School Break Schedule: The South African DBE has confirmed the changes to the September 2025 school holidays and the revised schedule is now available. Managing vacations is important for families and is schools need to plan for teaching and examination timetables and hence these changes are important.
The Reason For The September Break Changes
Curriculum recovery and assessments will be dealt with in 2025 and for this the DBE will shift the break in South African schools. As explained by the DBE, the break was shifted so that there can be adequate revision and preparation properly after the earlier disruptions.
The September break is the first period when students and teachers look forward to, for it grants a brief respite prior to the gruelling examinations in Term 4. This year, there is however a need to remind parents to cross check the revised timetable so as to reduce the confusion that may arise.
Updated September 2025 School Calendar
According to the DBE, the public school September break is scheduled as follows:
- Inland provinces and their schools (Gauteng, Free State, Limpopo, Mpumalanga, North West): The break begins on Friday, 19 September 2025, with classes set to resume on Tuesday, 30 September 2025.
- Coastal provinces and their schools (KwaZulu-Natal, Eastern Cape, Western Cape, Northern Cape): The break begins on Friday, 26 September 2025, with classes set to resume on Monday, 6 October 2025.
South Africa is known to schedule classes differently for children in the coastal and inland regions. However, the break in September 2025 allows for more days off than usual, especially for the inland regions, allowing families more time to spend together.
What Parents And Learners Should Know
As children leaders, you are strongly encouraged to make sure your young ones rest and prepare well. Even though holidays are a time for leisure, pupils must also use the time to study for their Term 4 final tests. Timetables for the final examinations and the planning of the last academic events will be finalised during the holidays.
